Description
Bust of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891), British civil engineer and builder of London's sewer system. He began his career in railway construction but examined London's sewerage problems after cholera outbreaks and water pollution problems in the 1850s. During 1859-65 he planned and supervised the construction of a sewerage system which used 318 million bricks in 2080 kilometres of tunnels which covered an area of 169 square kilometres. This system discharged 1890 million litres of sewage through 3 pumping stations away from the city. Bazalgette also built the Thames Embankment and bridges over the River Thames at Putney and Battersea.
