Jullian Assange Balloons by Caroline Reyes-Loughrey Photography
I used to live next to the Embassy of Ecuador in London. When Julian Assange granted a rare interview and looked out from the balcony, they released these balloons and I was there to capture its splendour! Red, Yellow, and Blue are the colours of the flag of Ecuador.
In 2006, Assange began work on Wikileaks, a Web site intended to collect and share confidential information on an international scale. The information his organization released earned him strong supporters and powerful enemies. For his efforts, the internet activist earned the Time magazine "Person of the Year" title in 2010. After arriving at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London in June 2012, seeking to avoid extradition to Sweden, Assange was granted political asylum by the Ecuadorean government in August 2012.
My wife unfortunately passed away from her long battle with cancer and I thank everyone that has bought carolines photographs and hope you continue which will support our children sincere regards Tristan Loughrey I started my love of photography when I was 13 yrs. old. I took a course with a friend and borrowed my cousin's SLR camera. I then persuaded my parents to get me my own, a Canon AE-1 SLR circa 1978 I think it was. I was never without it, I became photography editor of our high school yearbook, that was fun! Fast forward to the digital age and I still love it. Though I landed in animation and advertising instead, on the side I sold stock photos for websites, and magazines. I had a photography website for my stock photos, a...

Hi Caroline! I did this. The colours of the balloons are an expression of solidarity with Ecuador (they are the colours of the Ecuadorian flag), and thanks for its bravery and principled stand in granting Julian Assange political asylum in the face of so much pressure from the US and UK. I spent a very hot morning in the back of a van inflating 150 balloons. By the time I got down to Knightsbridge the police wouldn't let us park anywhere near Hans Crescent and the crowd was already huge and tightly packed. But I managed to squeeze through the crowds in time to listen to the speech, distributing balloons to people as I passed, and we all released them as his speech ended and the crowd erupted in applause. I've seen close-up photos of Assange at that moment peering up at the sky, watching as the balloons drifted away. That's the exact moment you've caught too. I think the products you've created are lovely. Can I ask that, now you've heard the history and purpose behind your photo, you donate a small percentage of any sales profits to the Julian Assange Defence Fund [ https://justice4assange.com/Donate ] or to WikiLeaks Staff Legal Defence Fund? Donations are tax-deductible in the US if you make them through the Freedom of the Press Foundation. Details: https://shop.wikileaks.org/donate
Caroline Reyes-Loughrey replied:
Hi Debra, what a small world, that's amazing you were the one who actually made those balloons I took a photo of. I live in hans place and everyday I walk my dog past the embassy, it was packed that day, I was on the harrods side and couldn't get a view of Mr. Assange but got the shot of the balloons. I support his work to bring us the truth. I have stage 4 cancer though Debra and these days my resources are spent on treatment, if I sell this print, maybe :) if I was not ill, I would definitely donate, but unfortunately not at this moment. I will however share the links on my facebook and tell them the story. All the best to you!
