Description
My husband showed me this beautiful little killdeer nest with four speckled eggs, right in the middle of our barn lot. The mother killdeer was nearby, doing her "broken wing act" -- trying her best to lure me away from her nest. Not wanting to cause her undue stress, I quickly snapped a few quick photos, and beat a hasty retreat.
I'm fascinated by their rocky nests. Although the larger stones were already in our barn lot, the killdeer brought all the little rocks and pebbles in from the driveway and the nearby gravel roadbank. It hardly seems like a warm fuzzy place for a eggs to incubate, but it evidently works for killdeer! :-)

Wonderful - I've never come across a killdeer nest. They're amazing birds, and it's amazing to me that their nests are so vulnerable.

Thank you, Sean! I've seen killdeer in our neighborhood, but this nest was a first for me, too! That mama bird put on quite a show, protecting her nest! :-)
