Description
Land formation on salt marshes. Salt marshes form on coastal mud flats such as estuaries. As salt resistant plants start to colonise, such as saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) seen here, the land level rises. This rise is due to plants trapping fine mud and silt particles, as this process continues other plant species then colonise the newly formed land. This is the opposite process to coastal erosion. The area seen was originally a sandy beach, and the process of land formation has occurred over a period of ten years. Photographed in Norfolk, England.
