Description
Macrophotograph of a leaf skeleton of the ivy plant, Hedera helix, showing the branching pattern & decreasing size of the veins (vascular tissue). The vascular tissue comprises the xylem, supplying water & minerals from the roots to the leaves & the phloem, which conducts the sugar manufactured in the leaves during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant. The veins are preserved due to the presence of lignin, a polymer resistant to decay, in the xylem. Magnification: x1. 5 at 35mm size.
