Description
Light micrograph of the flagellate protozoan Barbulanympha ufalula, which forms a symbiotic relationship with a rare wood-eating cockroach, Cryptocercus punctulatus. B. ufalula lives in the hindgut of the cockroach, where it provides the essential digestive enzymes lacking in the host. The cockroach feeds exclusively on wood, but is unable to convert cellulose into carbohydrate. In return for providing this service, B. ufalula shares in the digestive products. The micrograph shows two brown fragments of half-digested food within the cytoplasm of the protozoa. Above this is a multiflagellate crown concealing the mouth area. Magnification: x110 at 35mm size.
