Description
"Merci Train Car" by TL Mair
After world war 2 the USA send a train of supplies to help rebuild and feed Europe, as a thank you France sent a train which consisted of WW one train cars designed to hold 40 men, or 8 horses which gave them the name of 40 and 8, the train had 49 cars, and was intended to be divided up among the then existing states, with one to be shared with Hawaii, and Washington DC. This car is in Ogden Utah at the State train museum.
Each car was loaded with gifts which were donated by the people of France, what a great gift, several of the cars still exist, but sadly many have been destroyed, either by fire, or just plain missing.
The beautiful dramatic red sky sets of the gray Merci train car, complimenting the many French county coats of arms, and the banner on the train sporting the French flag colors, and the words "Train De La Reconnaissance Francaise" which are attached to the side of the car.
This is a world war 1 era French train car which was designed to hold 40 men, or 8 horses, which gave them the name of "40 and 8"
