Description
This humongous monk seal flopped its way onto the rocks as I was shooting the smaller seal. I've posted another image of the two together. She is B14/B16, with no given name, and is a 4 year old female. Just after her birth, her mother was shot and killed by a disgruntled idiot on the beach. Monk seals are indigenous to Hawaiian waters and are on the severely endangered species list. They used to count many thousands, now they count only 1100. The green on this female is algae which she loses as she moults. I suppose she doesn't feel the jagged edges of the rocks due to her massive amount of blubber.
