The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is among the largest of waterfowl, seen most commonly in bays, marshes and ponds on the upper eastern coast of the United States, as well as around the Great Lakes. It has a longer tail than most other swans, white plumage with a yellowish neck, striking orange bill with a dark base and raised black knob, and a gently curved neck, often gracefully S-curved. It measures about 60 inches in length and about 22 pounds in weight. Mute Swans are protective of their territory and young, and can be aggressive and nasty to intruders.

This portrait of an elegant adult Mute Swan preening was photographed at the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center at Milford Point, Milford, Connecticut, on 8-13-2017. Besides being a nature center, the bird sanctuary at this Coastal Center is located on an 8.4 acre barrier beach, with access to the Long Island Sound.
