I absolutely love this photo of Hazel. My first visit to the Smoky Mountains was in April 2017. I have been searching for a black bear photo for years and this one stole my heart. This beautiful girl was photographed the same year. I am very pleased with the canvas print!!

Artist's Description
This is Dawn's interpretation of the Horned Burrowing Monster in the Navajo Creation literature, very ancient stories. She lived on the Navajo reservation in Arizona as a teenager. Years later, she told some Lakota students in South Dakota a few fragments of the tales of Naayee Niezghani and Tobajishchini, twin brothers who, with the help of their father the Sun, other gods, and animals (including the humble ground squirrel), bravely fought to rid the earth of the horrible monsters that once made the earth nearly uninhabitable. Dawn's Lakota students, of course, wanted to draw their ideas of the monsters, and while they did, Dawn drew a sketch of her own. Her students loved it, and said, "You should make a book of drawings of all the monsters!" But Dawn said, "Oh, I couldn't do that -- I'm not Navajo -- it wouldn't be right." But the Lakota children clamored, "But, we want it! We want it!" Dawn drew one other monster before deciding she shouldn't do such a project without first...
About Dawn Senior-Trask
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

This is a wonderful interpretation of a Navajo mythical monster, I believe that it was very appropriate and sensitive of you to consult with the Navajo Elders, something few people would consider doing - Thank you for your insightful thoughts on 'Cottage', Thank you.... Chris R
