Description
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
― Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, into a royal family of the Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe in the South African village of Mvezo. He became the first in his family to receive a formal education. In the 1940s, Mandela became an inspired leader of both peaceful and armed resistance demonstrations against the white minority’s oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. For his actions, he was imprisoned for nearly three decades. During this time, he became the face of the antiapartheid movement both within his country and internationally. Released from prison in 1990, he participated in the eradication of apartheid. In 1994, he became the first black president of South Africa, forming a multiethnic government. After retiring from politics in 1999, he remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice in his own nation and around the world until his death in 2013 at the age of 95.
