Nicholas Hardinge (1699-1758), English civil servant and poet, writing at his desk. Hardinge studied at Eton and Cambridge. He was a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, Clerk of the House of Commons (1731-1752), and Joint Secretary of the Treasury. After his death, a collection of his Latin verse was published by his son. Hardinge also wrote an essay on the administration of government in England during the King's Minority ('Essay on the Regency'). Artwork from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
