The Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) is a non-migratory owl that stays close to its breeding range, and is active only during the day. It measures about 16 inches in length and about 11 ounces in weight. It has a white face with a black border, yellow eyes, a yellow beak, dark brown upperparts with a white spotting pattern, and white underparts with brownish horizontal bands from the chest down to the tail. Three subspecies have been described, and the North American subspecies is "caparoch". The preferred habitat is boreal forest with conifers and species including birch, poplar, and willow. In the United States, the Northern Hawk Owl may be found as far south as northern Minnesota. Preferred prey includes small rodents, juvenile hares, red squirrel, and birds.
