Though these raptors look like owls, they behave like hawks. The northern hawk owl's long tail and habit of perching atop solitary trees and hunting by daylight are more consistent with hawk behavior. These well-equipped raptors can detect prey by sight up to half a mile away and also find prey by sound, even when it is under a foot of snow.

Northern Hawk Owls occupy biomes that are characterized by coniferous forests - mostly pines, spruces, and larches. These nonmigratory birds inhabit and breed in the circumpolar range that encompasses Alaska, northern Canada, Scandinavia, and northern Russia. However, in some winters when the small-mammal population is diminished, they move south into southern Canada and the northern United States.
