Thinking some of you might be interested to see what my original clay sculptures look like, I'm posting this small plaque that I just finished. I will soon take it to a foundry where it will be cast into bronze. It expresses my fascination with the intricate and whimsical forms that alfalfa takes as it matures toward seed production. Alfalfa is a common crop here in the river valley where my family and I live in southern Wyoming, and it often escapes from the hay fields and grows feral along roadsides and ditches. It is a host plant for the intriguingly-shaped Satyr Anglewing butterfly, which I have sculpted in-the-round. I hope you will enjoy this glimpse into my sculpture process, and I will post the finished bronze when I receive it from the foundry, probably in a couple of months, since it must go through many time-consuming steps.
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
