The Eastern Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger), also called Bryant’s Fox Squirrel, is the largest species of tree squirrels in North America measuring about 20 to 30 inches in length and up to about 2.5 pounds in weight. There are about 10 sub-species described with distinct differences in appearance. Preferred habitat of in open forest stands with sparce vegetation, and forest edge habitat. Preferred diet included tree acorns, nuts, buds, and seeds. The Eastern Tree Squirrel was introduced by humans to California in the early 1900’s. They have competed with native California Gray Squirrels for habitat, and usually triumph in the turf wars.
