Description
Though a hybrid - a cross between a pomelo and a mandarin - the sweet orange, developed by the Chinese, was enjoyed as early as 300 BC. There’s no question that, in the United States at least, the orange is not only the most popular citrus fruit but one of the most popular of all fruits. Though the orange tree requires a warm climate (in North America it can only be grown in states like Florida and Southern California), it does best in areas where there are occasional light frosts in winter. The leaves of the trees are evergreen and edible and in many parts of the world are added to hot beverages such as tea or mulled wine as a spice. In this photo, a cluster of three ripe oranges is set off by the surrounding deep green foliage.
