Description
Paranal Observatory, Cerro Paranal, Chile. The four Unit Telescopes (Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun) in the large buildings make up the Very Large Telescope (VLT). These 8.2-metre telescopes have their images combined by interferometry. In addition, there are the four smaller VLT 1.8-metre auxiliary telescopes (white), whose images are also combined. Other telescopes are the VLT Survey Telescope (VST, back edge), and the 4.1-metre Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA, on a separate mountain peak in the background). Other structures include the Observatory Control Room building (front edge).
