Description
Portrait of an Elizabethan lady in a sumptuous gown and ruff, painted by Robert Peake the Elder in 1600. Intruiging to think that, as a member of Elizabeth's court and (presumably Elizabeth's successor, James I), this unknown young woman would almost certainly have witnessed performances by the Lord Chamberlain's Men and the King's Men of plays by Shakespeare (assuming, of course, that Shakespeare actually did write the plays attributed to him), quite probably including Shakespeare himself as actor.
