Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''Queen Christina'', a 1934 historical drama film directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring the legendary Greta Garbo in the titular role. The film also features John Gilbert as Garbo's co-star. "Queen Christina" is known for its opulent production design, lavish costumes, and the mesmerizing performances of its leads.
The film is a fictionalized account of the life of Queen Christina of Sweden, who ruled from 1632 to 1654. It explores her reign, her struggles with political and personal decisions, and her complex relationships with various characters, including the Spanish envoy Antonio (John Gilbert) and her trusted advisor, Oxenstierna (Lewis Stone).
Greta Garbo delivers a magnetic and memorable performance as Queen Christina, capturing the character's intelligence, charisma, and her inner conflicts between her duties as a monarch and her personal desires. John Gilbert, a former silent film heartthrob, delivers a strong performance as Antonio, bringing depth and chemistry to his character's relationship with Christina.
"Queen Christina" is noted for its lush cinematography, extravagant sets, and grand historical costumes, all of which contribute to the film's visual splendor. The film's direction by Rouben Mamoulian adds to its overall elegance and dramatic tension.
One of the film's most iconic scenes features Queen Christina's decision to abdicate her throne for love, symbolized by her famously shedding her royal attire. This scene has become legendary in cinema history.
"Queen Christina" is regarded as one of Greta Garbo's finest performances and one of the highlights of her career. It remains a classic of the Golden Age of Hollywood, celebrated for its historical drama, romantic elements, and the timeless allure of its lead actress.

About the artist:
Rolf Goetze was a German illustrator and painter who painted film poster art for about 30 years. His early works began in the 1930s, when he did a number of posters for Greta Garbo films, including "Queen Christina" (1934), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Camille" (1936). He continued creating German poster artwork of mostly American films through the 1960s.
From a stylistic point of view, Goetze's posters are characterized by a great compositional structure; the German designer was capable of blending incredibly realistic, close-up portraits, with elaborate scenes in the background. An undisputed master of portraiture, Goetze created numerous posters using monochrome, black and white, or sepia palettes. His posters look like realistic, vivid charcoal drawings. They are able to represent faces and expressions of their protagonists, as mirrors faithful to reality.
