This large water bird, a great blue heron (Ardea herodias), is about to strike. When they are stalking fish, as this one is, they often stand statue-like, apparently unaware of anything around them except the water before them - and their dinner swimming below the surface. I took this photo in Florida, but these large wading birds are common throughout North America. You will see them in wetlands areas such as marshes, riverbanks, and lakes, as well as on the shores of open water.
