Description
This is an oil on canvas painting of our beloved Pete, who we lost recently. Pete was a rescue dog, and we got him when he was about two, and he was around 14 when he died.
We had no warning that he was close to passing on, except he seemed a little different the particular night he died. We couldn't put a finger on it, but Don got up to be with him through the night. He (Don) was sitting on the floor with Pete, and he dosed off for a while. For whatever reason, Don just knew Pete was dead. He was lying in a position that we'd seen hundreds of times, and appeared to be perfectly at peace.
Pete was a big son of a gun. He weighed in the vicinity of 125 pounds, and when he'd be on our love seat, his head touched on end, and his tail the other. He was the most loving and lovable dog imaginable.
For all of his size and strength, he was scared to death of our cats, and if there was no wide open way for him to get around our other dog, which is a terrier, he'd just sit there and whine. Everyone in our little town of 200 and some folks knew him. He loved to roam, but never did anyone complain about him tearing up flowers or making a mess in a yard. Pete, and our terrier Wally, are probably the best dogs we've ever had. Our terrier, Wally, is 16 1/2 years old, so we'll be facing the loss of him most any time. I started this painting just a few days before ol' Pete died. It was oh, so hard to finish the painting. He had the most kind and expressive eyes imaginable. Having to create him as best I could was tough. I was so glad to finish the eyes. Thanks for letting me blow a little bit here. We miss him dearly.
RIP, old and wonderful friend, RIP.
