Description
Riverine rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis). This is a critically endangered rabbit found only in South Africa. There are thought to be less than 250 left in the wild (as of 2004). It reaches a body length of around 40 centimetres. It is nocturnal, resting in a shallow burrow (scrape) by day, and feeding on riverside vegetation by night. This feeding is thought to help the vegetation regenerate and so prevents the soil being eroded in floods. This rabbit is limited to floodplains and farms around seasonal rivers in the semi-arid Karoo region. The Riverine Rabbit Conservation Project co-ordinates private farms to preserve habitats. Photographed in Bijstein Private Nature Reserve, South Africa.
