Description
Boyle's book. Title page of the Latin edition of Robert Boyle's book The Sceptical Chemist (1661). Robert Boyle (1627-91) was an Irish chemist who established chemistry as a separate science. In this book, Boyle argued that elements combine to form compounds, which can be broken apart again into their constituent elements. This led to the overturn of the idea of the four Aristotelian elements: air, earth, fire and water (depicted as the figures at centre left & right). He formulated Boyle's law: that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to its pressure. Boyle was a founder member of the Royal Society in London, England.
