Rose and Hydrangea Chinoiserie by Kimberly Potts artist. Chinoiserie is a curious and persnickety sounding word based upon European interpretation (and imitation) of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, especially in the decorative arts, garden design, architecture, literature, theatre, and music. I have also heard it referred to as “Chinese-ish.” Certainly easier to pronounce.

Chinoiserie evokes various reactions and moods in people. It has been in style for centuries, and is not likely to fade away anytime soon. Chinese ginger jars, foo dogs and matching adornments can be acquired in many places, ranging from Hobby Lobby to exclusive auction houses such as Christi’s.

For me, chinoiserie intertwines well with my intuitive inclination of whimsy.

I paint things that intrigue me. "Peccadillo" is beautiful to me and lends to my artistic style: An over-abundance of freckles, wild and tangled hair, little spaces in teeth, insecure and slightly gawkish posture, only found in the innocent and insecure. I love to take my viewers on a visual adventure. I encourage you to make up your own mind about what's going on in my pieces. I do not dwell upon the details; instead, I prefer to "imply" the details. Artwork that plays dark shadows against light areas are my favorite -- and I try to achieve this effect within every piece that I create.
