Vintage motel sign along old Route 66 in Canute, Oklahoma. This abandoned neon gem was once a signpost for rest and relaxation on the long prairie highway in western Oklahoma. 100 miles from Oklahoma City and 150 miles from Amarillo, Texas, Canute was the site of the first oil well in Oklahoma in 1917 and soon was bustling from new traffic from the "mother road' as travelers heading west from Chicago to California could stop, shop and rest.
