Description
Bolton Priory, is a ruined Augustinian monastery nestled in the Yorkshire Dales on the banks of the River Wharfe. The quaint village stands adjacent to the Bolton Abbey Estate, which includes the abbey ruins.
The 12th-century Augustinian priory is set in a beautiful location on the banks of the River Wharfe. The abbey was founded around 1154 by monks who were granted land on which to build the Priory
At the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the priory buildings were extensively damaged. However, the nave of the priory church survived to serve as the parish church for the then village of Bolton-in-Wharfedale.
