Description
Capturing that dramatic fleeting moment as a nature photographer is both challenging and exhilarating. This scene was photographed along the Rocky Mountain front on the northeast quadrant of Glacier National Park, Montana. The prominent feature is the monolithic Chief Mountain which abruptly rises from the prairies and Aspen forest to a height of 9080'. Chief is a sacred place for both the Flathead and Blackfeet Indian tribes. I swear you can literally feel the energy!
We made several visits over days to determine a suitable location to compose, and when it was time to execute the sessions you just keep your fingers crossed for superb lighting and dramatic conditions. As the sun faded it began to illuminate the underside of the clouds with warmth and I knew this could totally change in seconds. I was able to record 3 sets of bracketed exposures, panning from left to right before the light and colors faded to blue.
