When Ted returned to Morenci, Arizona in 1925, from spending five years in Italy, he couldn't speak English and was put in the first grade at age 16. He graduated from high school in 1932 and "worked the mines with his family.

It was then he realized he did not want to live life as a miner. He said that he couldn't live without the sun light - and in the early mining days of Morenci there was no open pit mine. The miners went underground before the sun rose, and came out when the sun went down. 'I had a full beard and was twenty-three when I graduated from high school, into a world hit by the depression. I knew I would be underground all of my life if I didn't succeed at something else.'"

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life.
