Description
The Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) is a large, tall, conspicuous, and noisy waterbird. It measures about 46 inches in length and weighs about 10.6 pounds. Adult plumage in the winter is almost entirely grey, and in the summer is mostly rust-stained. The rust-stained summer plumage is the result of preening their feathers with iron-rich mud, thereby staining their feathers. Adults distinctively have a bright red crown and lores. In flight, the Sandhill Crane flies with its neck fully extended. They breed in marshes, on tundra and on grasslands. In the winter, they feed in fields and return to shallow water at night.
This photograph of a pair of Sandhill Cranes standing in tall marsh grass was taken at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin on 8-13-2015. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 vr2 lens to capture this image.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America group:
