Description
The giant saguaro cactus (carnegiea gigantea) is the icon of the Sonoran Desert, and namesake of Saguaro National Park near Tucson, Arizona. The outer shell of the cactus is pleated so that it can expand and contract depending upon how much water it is storing in its tissues. This tall, columnar cactus is extraordinarily efficient at soaking up water through its shallow roots, and can absorb enough in one good rain storm to sustain it a full year.
During the summer of 2021, July brought record rainfalls to the Sonoran Desert after many years of drought, and the saguaro cacti were very satisfied. They went from shriveled and deeply pleated to fat and sassy within days of the first rains. This saguaro is plump with all of the water it has absorbed, even five months after the last significant rain.
