Description
B’seter Elyon, Abstract Art Directed Inward toward the Holy
B’Seter Elyon. I will attempt to explain something of the meaning of these exalted words in relation to myself and my artwork , which is presented before you here.
The simple meaning of the two words can be explained thus; Concealed within the Most High. That is; the Almighty, blessed is He, protects and conceals me from all foe. Most importantly, He gathers me into His Holy abode and rescues me from every force that might pull me away from walking in His holy paths. He is before me always, and I am concealed behind Him.
This title is most important for me, for my artwork; in that Art, by its nature, descends into the lowest realms, the furthest reaches from the holy emanation of the Most High. Thus, if I am not securely attached to the holy Creator, blessed is He, my involvement in the profane realm of artmaking is a grave danger.
This is also part of the message of my artwork, as I wish to inform people whose paths are not always directed inward towards the holy, that this is the foremost point to consider and correct.
Thus, the artwork reaches out to the farthest places, and provides a means by which to return to the holy.
In the Midrash (Yalkut Shimoni, Tehillim 842) it is taught that Moshe Rabbenu, a”h, said the words of this Psalm (91) upon the completion of the Mishkan, and that they refer to the construction of the holy Mishkan by Betzalel, which was through divine inspiration of the highest level. Indeed the work in the Mishkan is the source of Art in the world. Thus Art is rooted in holiness and intimate connection to the divine.
My full and explicit intent in all my artwork is only one; to return Art to its holy source; and thus draw all who will view the work also to their holy source; that all who truly desire can merit also to dwell under the protection of the Most High.
