Absolutely masterful art! I am blown away by your talent for rendering water and sky. The subjects ain't 'alf bad either. The S-42 as you say began the era of the big flying boats. Here in Baltimore, of course, is where Glenn L. Martin built some of the greatest flying boats ever, and being one year late to the party was soon forgotten. At least I think it was. It's worth mentioning that in the 21st Century both the Hawaii (built in 1945) and Philippine Mars (1946) are in service as firefighting water tankers. In a bit of serendipity, their owner, Coulson Aircrane, in Canada, also uses Sikorsky S61 Type 1 helos. Old Igor would be proud.

About Acrylic Prints

Acrylic Print with Mounting Posts

Mounting Option #1

Acrylic Print with Hanging Wire

Mounting Option #2

Bring your artwork to life with the stylish lines and added depth of an acrylic print.   Your image gets printed directly onto the back of a 1/4" thick sheet of clear acrylic.

The image is the art - it doesn't get any cleaner than that!

All acrylic prints ship within 3 - 4 business days and arrive "ready to hang" with four aluminum mounting posts (Option #1) or hanging wire (Option #2).

The high gloss of the acrylic sheet complements the rich colors of any image to produce stunning results.

There are two different ways to mount your acrylic print.

Option #1 (Mounting Posts) - Attach your print to your wall with four aluminum mounting posts.   The cylindrical cap of each mounting post can be removed, allowing you to thread a small screw along the center axis of the of post and into the wall.   When you're finished, simply reattached each cap, and you're done.   The mounting posts act as stand-offs and keep your print separated from the wall by 1".   All of the required mounting hardware (i.e. posts, screws, and wall anchors) is included with your print.   Click here for mounting details.

Option #2 (Hanging Wire) - With this option, your acrylic print is attached to a 1/4" thick black board which has a wooden frame and hanging wire attached to the back.   There are no metal mounting posts at the corners.   Simply put a nail in your wall, hang your print from the hanging wire, and you're done.   Due to the thickness of the black board and mounting frame, your print is separated from the wall by 1.50"   Click here for mounting details.

Artist's Description

Driven from Russia by the Russian Revolution of 1917, Igor Sikorsky always dreamed of building giant aircraft. His partnership with Juan Trippe and Pan American would give him that opportunity. With Trippe's eyes now set on the oceans, the new plane called for an increased lifting capacity that would permit carrying fuel for a 2500 mile nonstop flight against a 30 mile-an-hour wind, at a cruising speed far in excess of the average operating speed of any flying boat at that time. Juan Trippe's challenge was also answered by Glen Martin but Sikorsky's S-42 was to be delivered first as Martin's plane was still almost a year away from completion.

The Sikorsky S-42 is regarded as the first truly American seaplane and was described as the "most beautiful aircraft of its time."

About Kenneth Young

Kenneth Young

Ken Young, a self-taught artist, has been sketching and drawing with pencil and pen and ink from a very young age. Born in Charleston South Carolina his family shortly migrated to Kingston New York then to Hudson in 1963. He progressed in skill when his mother purchased a correspondence course with Art Instruction Schools, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was introduced to oil in high school in 1971 and became fascinated with accurately trying to render the textures, light and shadow found in nature. Since then oil has been his favorite medium. At first his aim was to come as close as possible to accurately rendering the subjects he painted. But now he favors trying to convey how the things he paints make him feel while still holding to a...
