Siyavush playing polo. A miniature painting from a fifteenth century manuscript of the epic poem of Shahnama. Siyavush was a legendary Iranian prince from the earliest days of the Iranian Empire. The Shahnama (The Book of Kings) is an epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE. It consists of 50,000 verses and tells the mainly mythical, but to some extent historical past of the Persian empire from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century.
