Description
Smoke plumes rising from fires in the marshland of the Tengah region of Kalimantan (formerly Indonesian Borneo). This south-coast area is being cleared to make way for agricultural use in response to a large influx of people from the neighbouring island of Java. The clearing process is similar to the slash-and-burn tactics used to level rain forests. The horseshoe-shaped inlet left of centre is Teluk Sebangan. This photograph was taken by the crew of Shuttle Discovery during Mission STS-48 of 12-18 September 1991.
