Description
The Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus) is a member of the Papilionidae (swallowtail) family and is found in the eastern United States from New England and southern Ontario in the north to Florida and Texas in the south. Its name is derived from its common host plant, the spicebush. It has a wingspan of about 4 inches. The upper surfaces of the wings are black-brown with a border of cream-yellow spots along the outer edge of the wings, and light blue spots on the middle portion of the wings. Spicebush Swallowtails, unlike other swallowtails, fly close to the ground. Adult Spicebush Swallowtails feed on the nectar of many flowers including honeysuckle, jewelweed, Joe-Pye weed, lantana, and thistle.
The Swallowtail is feeding on the nectar of Glossy Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora hybrid), a deciduous scrub about 3 to 6 feet in height, that grows easily in gardens, and has white and pink funnel-shaped flowers. It is in the honeysuckle family and is very fragrant, and attractive to butterflies.
This Spicebush Swallowtail on Glossy Ibelia flowers was photographed at the Butterfly Garden in Tods Point Park, Greenwich, Connecticut on 8-19-2017. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 VR lens to capture this image.
