Description
Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Staphylococcus epidermidis is a naturally occurring bacterium on human skin. For humans with normal immunological defenses the germ means little danger. In the hospital, however, it can be a cause of severe, so-called nosocomial infections. Frequently, it triggers endocarditis after open-heart surgery, infections after prosthesis insertion, and plastizitis with longer catheters or drains. In these infections (by coagulase-negative staphylococci), the proportion of S. epidermidis is 70 to 80 per cent. Magnification 15,0001 (at 12x12 cm image size).
