The Sunbittern is among the most beautiful of the birds found in Brazil, and ranges from Guatemala to Peru. It is found along forest rivers and streams throughout the country. When its wings are closed, the Sunbittern is very well camoflaged and looks like a heron with stripes, long orange-yellow legs, long neck and a long and pointed bill. It walks along the river banks hunting for crabs, or scratching the ground for insects. Only when it is in courtship display, frightened or in flight does it show its very colorful wing feathers which are decorated with chestnut, yellow and black, as seen in this photograph. Some suggest that the pattern looks like giant bright eyes, and seems to startle potential predators.

This photograph was taken while on the Claro River in the Pantanal, Brazil on 10-14-2010. The Sunbittern displayed its colorful wing feathers when our motor launch approached it, as if on cue, possibly as a defensive maneuver. It continued to display for the 10 min...
