Description
Sunset on The Glades is a recent acrylic painting from the hands of Riley Geddings, Florida Landscape Artist, and depicts a scene in The Florida Everglades.
Let me initiate this description at the top - with that beautiful, magnificent sky. The length of the twilight hours in Florida is rather brief - the zenith of the colors last but a few minutes. Riley has captured this particular sky over Florida's Everglades when it was indeed at the acme - the apex - the summit - the pinnacle of its beauty. Appearing on-screen in the top lefthand corner are the somewhat darker-colored scudding clouds heralding the night. The darker blues of the sky then blend in to perfection with those simply gorgeous purply-mauvy hues in the middle - and on to the reddish-orange shades displayed just above the far horizon - over which one can admire those few remaining floating white clouds illuminated from below by the setting sun !
Now for the scene per se - the distant horizon of typical Florida Everglades foliage and trees forms a perfect backdrop for the grassy plain reaching towards us and meeting that shallow fresh-water pond.
On the left we see a couple of typical Florida Bald Cypress trees, adorned with hanging Spanish Moss, and with their "Cypress Knees" (roots) protruding up from the shallow bottom. A smaller tree has died and is leaning down into the water near the lily-pads - a good place for fish to hide - hence the presence of a Great White Heron searching for that last morsel before retiring for the night.
Flying in to join him - or her - is another of the same species - gliding in on silent
wings - and Riley has captured this graceful bird's outline perfectly. On the right of the painting one sees a clump of Florida's State Tree - the stately Sabal Palms (Cabbage Palms) engulfed by more typical Florida ground cover.
One final noticeable element is the reflection of the overhead clouds mirrored in the waters below. Good job, Riley !!
