Description
I've wanted to paint seagulls for some time. The original reference photo was of Silver Gulls (found in Australia), but I decided to change the species to Franklin's Gulls, as I feel their smart black heads provided more tonal contrast than the (white) head of the Silver Gull.
Depicted in breeding plumage, sometimes these birds develop a beautiful pink suffusion on the breast. I decided to keep them white, in favour of a limited colour scheme.
There were many technical obstacles to overcome, and some new techniques developed. Namely, getting the wave in the background to appear out of focus! This was my first attempt at painting a wave, and first attempt at depicting sand. Every grain of sand was stippled on : a feat of patience.
Native to central Canada, Franklin's Gulls have occasionally been sighted on Australian shores. So if you see one in Australia, you know he's a long way from home!
