The Boy on the Seahorse statue, (El Niño Sobre el Caballo de Mar) is one of two iconic symbols in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
The other is Our Lady of Guadalupe parish. This statue was the first statue that was placed on the Malecon in downtown Puerto Vallarta, a 10-foot replica of the Boy on the Seahorse statue that was originally at Las Pilitas on Los Muertos Beach.
In 1960, eighteen-year-old Rafael Zamarripa Castaneda won the Mexican National Sculpture award. He created the lovely seahorse statue that was originally placed at Las Pilitas, an outcropping at the south end of Los Muertos Beach, in the late 1960’s. A recent addition to the site has been the tiled mural of the city’s name.
