The "Grandmother Rock" watches the sunset, as she does every evening. This well-known landmark graces the shore at Trinidad State beach in northern California. It resembles a woman in Victorian dress gazing out to sea. The first time I saw it, it struck me as the figure of a lonely woman awaiting her sailor's return.

This is just one of the wonders of Humboldt County's coastline and it's easily accessible. The beach is a perfect place to spend a day with the family and it's one of the few that's dog friendly, too.

The town of Trinidad is also located at the southernmost point of Patrick's Point Drive, a scenic byway that follows the coastline for several miles just west of Highway 101. If you're traveling the Redwood Highway, this little detour is well worth the extra few minutes' drive.
