Description
Mexican artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957) was commissioned to decorate one of the walls of the second floor of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City and worked on it between January and November of 1934. He created "Man Controller Of The Universe" or "The Man in Control of the Universe" - "El hombre controlador del universo".
This fresco is 4.85 meters x 11.45 meters in size and has an openly political content. The worker appears as the central axis from which the image is divided into two. The left section is configured as a critique of the capitalist world, characterized by class struggle and corrupted by repression and war. Darwin's presence - a reference to the development of science and technology - contrasts with the advance of the soldiers of the First World War. Greco-Roman sculpture represents religion and Western thought, while its counterpart, at the opposite extreme, the fall of fascism. The right section presents an idealized vision of the socialist world: workers demonstrate peacefully in Red Square. Lenin leads the union of the working class. Marx, Engels, Trotsky and Bertram D. Wolfe call for the cohesion of the world proletariat. The ellipses radiating from the machine embody the macrocosm and the microcosm. The upper left orbit contains diseased cells, symbol of the decadence of the capitalist world. Those that appear at the opposite extreme, the socialist world, are healthy and allude to the genesis of life.
