Description
This is another painting inspired by the "Wind In The Willows" classic tale for children - and anyone else who loves a good story. It shows Mole taking refuge in the hollow at the foot of a large beech tree, deep in the fearsome Wild Wood.
It is now winter and the animals living alongside the river and surrounding countryside are beginning to take a well earned rest after a busy summer. Mole has been staying with his friend Ratty in the water rat's riverside home. Ratty has been trying to write some poems but has fallen asleep next to the warm fire. Suddenly Mole decided he would go and make the acquaintance of kindly Mr Badger. It was something he had wanted to do ever since he caught a fleeting glimpse of this shy animal some months ago. However, Ratty kept putting off arranging this and made excuses to the effect that Badger didn't like visiting other animals or having visitors coming to his home - he just liked a quiet, undisturbed life. Ratty assured Mole that Badger would simply turn up one day. Fed up with waiting, Mole set out for Badger's house. However, he only knew that it was in the middle of The Wild Wood and recklessly ignored Ratty's warning that it was a place where river-bankers rarely went and, if they did, they never went alone because the wood was full of weasels, stoats and foxes. Ratty explained that The Wild Wood could be a frightening place - except for Badger - because nobody messed with him!
Eventually, Mole found The Wild Wood. It seemed harmless enough even on that cold winter's day. Soon however, he found himself to be hopelessly lost and frightened. He began to hear strange noises. Unfriendly faces seemed to be looking at him from everywhere before suddenly disappearing again. The noises grew louder and more threatening. A rabbit ran up to him. "Get out of this, you fool, get out!" he said to Mole before disappearing down a burrow.
The terrified Mole eventually took refuge in the hollow at the foot of a large beech tree and hid beneath some dry leaves. He was now too tired to go any further. He lay there expecting the worse. Not to worry, Ratty had by now woken up to find his friend gone. He guessed that Mole might have gone to find Badger and his suspicions were confirmed when he found Mole's tracks leading to the Wild Wood. The heavily armed Ratty plunged into the wood and eventually found his frightened friend in the hole at the bottom of the beech tree. After a rest, the two friends set off for Badger's house. However, there were some new problems. It was now dark, snow was falling heavily and consequently Ratty was not sure of his bearings!

Anthony you have stunned us again. It`s an incredible tale you have told and, it`s accompanied by a beautiful painting. The forest looks so cold and ominous. Conditions are bound to worsen. I would certainly hope "Mole and Ratty" make it out of this dire situation unscathed. You earn another gold medal "Master Anthony". awesome work brother l.v.f.
Anthony Lyon replied:
Dave, many thanks for your kind and generous comments. I'm pleased you like the painting. Don't worry about Ratty and Mole- they are survivors. All will be revealed in another painting I'm doing inspired by this lovely old fashioned children's story.
