Description
The typical California poppy is solid orange and nearly ubiquitous as the state's official flower. I have occasionally seen California poppies that were orange only at the center and golden yellow at the petal edges. I learned recently that these are a separate variety popularly known as coastal California poppies (also beach California poppies) for their affinity to coastal areas of the state. This glowing trio of coastal California poppies was on display during an open house at Prisk Native Garden (Long Beach, California, USA), a small environmental nature center that is designated a Schoolyard Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. This learning center is devoted exclusively to the richness of California native flora (and some fauna). (Olympus E-M5 Mark II & Olympus M.75-300mm zoom at 281mm [563mm in 35mm equivalent], f/6.7, 1/640 sec., ISO 200, filtered afternoon sun, handheld; minimal processing)
