Description
Types of electrical cables. Thicker cables are designed to carry larger currents than thinner ones. Electrical wires are usually copper because of its excellent conductivity, although metals such as aluminium are also used. Simple, two-wire cables (left, far left) are commonly used in items such as speaker cables. Three-wire cables (right, far right) are used in situations that require the item to be earthed to prevent short circuits and electric shocks (eg. household appliances), and are colour-coded to ensure they are connected correctly (blue:neutral, brown:live, green and yellow:earth). All electrical cables are insulated within a plastic or rubber sheath. The amount of insulation depends on the intended use for the cable.
