Salt pans. Water evaporates from these shallow pools leaving a residue of salt which is collected and refined. Those shown here are situated on Ile de Re, off the Atlantic coast of France near La Rochelle harbour. The salt pans cover 1500 hectares and yield an average of 3000 tonnes of salt per year.
