A crowd of fashionable onlookers view a parade of race-horses by French artist Louis Icart (1888-1950), dating from c.1930. Icart enjoyed huge success in his day, both as an in-demand illustrator for the fashion industry and as a painter in his own right. Drawing on 18th century Rococo painting, Icart developed his own effervescent style that some dismissed as insubstantial but was nevertheless popular enough for him to buy a magnificent house in Montmartre, where he died in 1950. Given the continuing popularity of his work, particularly in Japan, not to mention Art Deco in general, it seems odd that there is no museum in Paris dedicated to his work. Even the location of his house in Montmartre seems to have been forgotten. Seems like the Paris Tourist Board is missing a trick. But it's never too late ...
