VIRGINA CITY NEVADA The churches

Virginia City grew to a population of over 30,000 and there were that many more in the district. Her hotels and theatres drew some of the greatest names.

Churches soon came to Virginia (as she was affectionately called). Jessie L Bennett, a pioneer Methodist minister gave the first sermon on C street on a Sunday morning in 1860. After he was finished he passed his hat and when it was returned to him he had several hundred dollars in gold and silver. A preacher was a novelty for the wild camp, but soon many came. The Roman Catholics built a small church in 1860, but a Washoe Zephyr leveled to the ground. The Methodist church was also wreaked by a Washoe Zephyr. In 1862 the Presbyterians organized, but didn�t get their church built until 1867. This building is still standing on street and is one of the oldest buildings in Virginia, having survived the Big Fire of 1875. The Episcopal church was also lost in the fire of �7...

After the death of her mother, Evelyne was raised by two aunts. Her school years where spent in Los Angeles, where she excelled in the arts. After High School she went to live with her Aunt Kate in Iowa, where she attended college, and continued her education in art. Evelyne was born with the ability to paint. She was an art major at Iowa State university and went on to teach art at Schenectady, NY. Evelyne loved the western desert and painted many desert landscapes along with...
