The blackthorn or sloe (Prunus spinosa) is a thorny bush / tree common across Europe. Its small, black fruit is commonly used to make sloe gin in England, pacharan in the Navarre area of Spain and other alcoholic drinks in other countries. If picked after the first frosts (or frozen after picking, to reduce the bitterness) the fruit can also be used to make jams. This image was taken on the South Downs in southern England; the tree has been bent over by the continuous prevailing winds that blow over these beautiful and barren hills from the nearby coast.
